TERMINAL TRANSMISSION #41:
YOUNG MONSTERS IN LOVE

Love is such a strange creature... |
Today's Valentine's Day-adjacent broadcast of TERMINAL TRANSMISSION was another success, smooth as a silk glove that you slip onto your hand and wrap around someone's throat as you...well, I'll let you fill in the blank on that one. I did my best to play a good mix of songs that I felt represented the various permutations of love, lust, and heartbreak that modern love can dole out to us.
Last week, I managed to get the lead singer from Eve 6 to shout out my show/Kpiss.FM, under the agreement that I would play their new single, "Black Nova." Since I'm a man of my word, I made sure to play the song at the top of my set today. It's an easy contract to fulfill, because the song is legitimately great. The verses have this slinky, dark underbelly feel to them achieved by the fuzzy single note guitar riff and and bass combination, and the chorus ramps up to this big wall of sound that just kind of overwhelms you in the best sense of the word.
The lyrics, while sounding fun and a little obtuse at first, are clearly telling the story of someone with a crippling addiction spiraling further and further out of control. The lyric that stands out to me in particular is "Ask for a corona in the amb-u-lance...", which singer/ bassist Matt Collins croons while smiling malevolently (or at least that's what I picture in my head as I listen to it for the tenth time on repeat).
My "Bandcamp Pick Of The Week" for this week was the song "Emily" by Ohio-based pop punk band The Overlooked, off of their freshman album "No One Cares." It's a solid, mid-to-slower tempo track, which to quote the band directly, is "... about sitting back, taking a second, and saying to yourself, "This is really how it's supposed to be?" Meanwhile realizing that things happen for a reason, as dreadful as they are."
Personally, I think there's some hints of love won and lost there, which is why I felt it was perfect for this playlist. Glad to see The Overlooked are still out here making great music. Buy this album and support them, so they can continue their rock 'n' roll journey!
If you missed today's broadcast, you can stream it here via the Kpiss website. You can also catch up on past episodes here. Happy Valentine's Day everyone. If you've got someone, hold 'em tight and let them know how much they mean to you. If you're a lonely heart, try to spend a little time loving yourself, and know that those tender aches of solitude are only temporary. I love you all. See you next week.
