 TRACK REVIEW:

PET WIFE - BAD WAY

by Chris La Vigna (@chrislavigna.bsky.social)

Once again I am dusting off the blog to conjure up some words about some cool music that I feel that you need to check out.  Life has been an absolute chaotic psychic minefield as of late, and if you're like me, you're grasping for any piece of art to get you through the day, let alone the next four years or so.

With that in mind: folks, it is my supreme pleasure to report to you that Brooklyn's PET Wife is back at it again with some more electro-pop realness. As if releasing their excellent album foam set this past spring wasn’t enough for us, their latest single, “BAD WAY” dropped in early October, and it has come to work its way to the top of all of your future Halloween/ Year-round Darksynth playlists, especially if you’re trying to organize your own D.I.Y. version of the blood rave sequence in Blade.

It's a dark and dirty song, fast and ferocious, clocking in at one minute and fifty five seconds. The track starts off with a few measures of nothing more than a pulsing kick drum sample, then slides in with a smooth low-fi synth riff, coupled with distorted vocals that feel as though they’re being whispered through a walkie talkie being held right to your ear.

As soon as you're seduced, the snares and clicks of the full percussion come in kicking, mixed with samples of distant screams, incoming sirens, and glitching sample vocals to further disorient and titillate.

"Bad Way" is the kind of song that will have you dancing like a person possessed, while also thinking to yourself "Damn, I'm in danger, aren't I?" This is a song that aims to confront you with its desire, to awaken the same feelings hiding within you and force them to come to the surface. This song is the sonic equivalent of cornering someone you’ve been exchanging glances with on opposite sides of the room at a basement dance party, placing your hand against the wall and leaning forward as the object of your love/lust backs against the wall, smiling coyly in an attempt to hide their excitement, never breaking eye contact once.

And just as you go in for the kiss/kill, the song comes to an abrupt end, and you have no choice but to hit play again and again and again, just to capture that darkly rapturous feeling once more, if only for a moment.
