TERMINAL TRANSMISSION #40:
LORDY LORDY, LOOK WHO'S TURNING 4040
|
Markula Lives! |
Today's live broadcast was the 40th episode of TERMINAL TRANSMISSION, and it turned out to be a perfect blend of the kind of sloppy irreverence and quality music exhibitionism that you've all undoubtedly come to expect from the T.T. brand. We're cruising on through the sound waves, folks. Pretty soon, I'll hit episode 50, 60, 70(!!) and beyond! Actually if I can at least make it having done this show for a year, I'll be happy.
That would mean that I'll be doing this in April, which is crazy! Like God damn, has it really been almost a year of this? It honestly does feel like just yesterday I was sweating profusely as I agonized over my first playlist and worried about what kind of "tone" I wanted to go for with my talk breaks. Remember those crappy Joe Camel skits?! Time is an illusion, and I am a half-assed magician wondering where all these cards spilling out of my sleeves came from.
My "Bandcamp Pick Of The Week" for today's show was the new single from Old City (feat. MURS), "Sixers." Every new single from this crew seems to outdo their last. Justin's punk-infused beats get harder and more infectious, Trè's verses get more intricate and thought-provoking (I want a t-shirt with the sentence "I'M IN THE SUBCULTURE WITH NO FUCKS TO SUBLET" printed on it in all caps), they're building towards something big with this debut album, and I feel truly lucky to be witnessing it all unfold in real time.
My buddy Ray Berly has once again graced us with a pick from his personal playlists, and it's some damn good stuff, as per usual. This week's song is "Exhale The Ash" from NZ Death Metal band Ulcerate. Here's his review:
Ulcerate - Exhale the Ash - Stare Into Death and Be Still (2020)
"I first saw New Zealand’s Ulcerate at Saint Vitus Bar in 2016 on their Shrines of Paralysis tour with support from Iceland’s Zhrine and Quebec’s Phobocosm. Shrines of Paralysis, being their fifth full length, arguably their most well received album, and one of my favorite albums of that year. Like the album, their set was an onslaught of high octane, technical mastery while never sacrificing the thick, gloomy atmosphere that has become a staple of their sound. So fast forward about four years later and the anticipation has finally given way. Stare Into Death and Be Still is undeniably Ulcerate, the formula is familiar, yet still effective.
“Exhale the Ash,” the second track, while also being the second shortest track, delivers a suffocating, cacophonous composition of expert-level technical proficiency, haunting melodic riffs, and unrelenting double bass. It’s a tightly packaged microcosm of the album and the band’s grandiose sound. The whole album has a sense of being submerged in the deepest depths of the ocean. It invokes a state of total isolation and a creeping, looming sense of dread that weighs in the back of your mind as you gaze into the abyss. Most importantly, it’s an incredibly humbling album that forces you to accept the inevitability of being ground into oblivion. It's terrifyingly bleak and that’s the point.
On the other hand, the album can be quite repetitive sounding and slow-paced, which can present a challenge to new listeners and even some veteran listeners who may want something different. However, it’s incredibly immersive and a treat if you surrender yourself and get lost in it."
