CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (5/14/20):
TENACIOUS D x NEON GENESIS EVANGELION MASHUP VIDEOS
by Chris La Vigna (@Chris_LaVigna)
TENACIOUS D, in case you don't already know, is an amazing comedy rock band consisting of two American treasures, professional musicians/funnymen Jack Black and Kyle Gass. They typically write songs about the joys of life, love, metal, and how awesome their band is. NEON GENESIS EVANGELION is a massively influential anime series, a tonally discordant and surreal show that uses giant robots and kaijus (or as they're called in the show, "angels") as an allegory for depression, loss, and the chasm that lies between our need to connect with each other and our utter horror at the prospect of leaving ourselves vulnerable enough to do so.
You wouldn't think to pair these two things together; most of us wouldn't. Most of us simply lack the unbridled creative genius that it would take to even envision a world where the poetry and melody of Tenacious D could be perfectly fused with NEON GENESIS EVANGELION. But for one great human being, a YouTube user by the name of "camhcom," the world simply wasn't good enough until these glorious videos existed.
Back in May 2019, the first video "I did (not) mean to blow your mind." Its an excellent mix of the Tenacious D song "Master Exploder" (off the soundtrack to their underrated film TENACIOUS D & THE PICK OF DESTINY), as well as footage NEON GENESIS and the song "Bataille décisive", composed by Shiro Sagisu for the show's soundtrack. Camhcom then followed this video up with a second mashup this past April, "This is (not) the greatest song in the world" which features of a truly masterful weaving of Tenacious D's signature song "Tribute" with various video and audio clips from EVANGELION, as well as clips of from PICK OF DESTINY and the band's short-lived cult classic HBO show. Again, Camhcom manages to lend some extra gravitas to both texts and creates a stunning work of art.
According to the bio on his page, camhcom is a sound editor/mixer, and other videos on his channel feature trailers he's worked on, as well as other music videos and compositions he's created. It's no wonder then that the quality of these videos is so high, this person literally does this stuff for a living. These videos are both short, so you can rewatch them over and over (like I've been doing) or you can take them in for the great pieces they are, then move on to exploring their creator's other work. Hopefully it gives you the boost of positive energy it gave me. This is not the greatest EVA in the world, this is just a tribute...
