[the deep end] is a perfect podcast for [as] fans to hear two fellow fans discuss all things Adult Swim |
For today's Q-Rec, I'm highlighting an awesome podcast that 's all about my favorite programming block/channel/bizarre comedic force of nature, [adult swim]. Yes, the fine people who have given us everything from AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE to TOO MANY COOKS, and who continue to push the boundaries of comedy and art as the years roll on. Let's take a look at the [the deep end]!
[the deep end] is a podcast featuring the humorous takes and tangents of two creatives, Matthew Jay and Steve Yurko, both of whom grew up with Adult Swim and the programs they developed and/or curated. They discuss everything from classic Adult Swim originals like HOME MOVIES and HARVEY BIRDMAN: ATTORNEY AT LAW, to anime imports that they aired on their Saturday anime block like COWBOY BEBOP and YU YU HAKUSHO, and of course more recent entries into the [as] canon like seasons one and two of JOE PERA TALKS WITH YOU and BALLMASTRZ 9009 (which some of you may remember I raved about in my debut entry to the Q-Rec column).
Jay and Yurko are both engaging hosts, whose in-depth knowledge of comedy, TV, and anime give them an impressive arsenal of cool facts to drop and discuss as they review a random forgotten pilot that aired on the 4 am slot back in 2003 (Thanks for reminding me about NIGHT OF THE LIVING DOO fellas!). They're good friends who have a natural rapport, and even when they go off topic, which admittedly happens often, they keep the conversation fun and usually cause you to start digging through your own memory banks to think about pivotal moments in your life where a work of art really spoke to you.

It certainly also helps that both hosts walk the walk as well as talk the talk: Matthew Jay is a writer and podcaster who's heavily involved with CHANNEL 101, and has a YouTube channel/podcast called Cartoons 101 where he creates cool video essays about animation/interviews animators about the craft. Meanwhile, Yurko is a talented artist who has worked on Adult Swim shows like ROBOT CHICKEN, HOT STREETS, and one of Adult Swim's more obscure titles, RICK AND MORTY. He's also worked as a storyboard artist on the Fox show DUNCANVILLE, which just got renewed for a second season.
Honestly, I personally love this podcast because I've never before heard anybody wax rhapsodic about Adult Swim and their brand of humor as much as me. As someone who literally has grown up alongside Adult Swim-- I was about 10 when it debuted in '01, which was right around the time I stopped being able to sleep and started turning on the TV to see a milkshake abusing a meatball while getting admonished by a floating box of fries--it feels validating to know there were other kids my age getting their brains warped.
Oh, and did I mention that they also have a lot of great guests? Episodes feature guests like Ben O' Brien from Wham City Comedy, CRAIG OF THE CREEK head writer Jeff Trammell, and Dr. Venture himself, James Urbaniak! So if you also dig Adult Swim and want to hear some great discussions about their impact on the world of comedy, animation, and television at large, check them out wherever you find your podcasts.

And if you really like the cut of their jib, maybe consider signing up for their patreon, where they have additional content like a podcast centered around the best TV Show of all time, THE VENTURE BROS. [the deep end] continues to put out weekly episodes even as the quarantine continues (Thank God for Skype), and even if they did slow down, that just gives you time to catch up on the 64 episodes they've released so far!
So start listening, and tell 'em Chris sent ya, to which they'll probably reply "Who? Oh, wait, that guy who's tweeting at us all the time? Uh yeah, that's cool..."
