CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (4/13/20):
RANDY WRITES A NOVEL

Randy's one puppet that doesn't screw around! Except for when it comes to reading us his novel... |
Y'know what, YouTube takes a lot of flak these days, and for good reason. They've become increasingly pro-censorship, it's impossible for any content that isn't heavily sanitized or outright kid-friendly to garner ad revenue, and no matter what, they still seem to serve as an excellent platform for far-right goons to spread misinformation. So yeah, we've definitely strayed far from the days of innocently logging on to watch Philip DeFranco and YouTube poop gold like "The Fesh Pince Of Blair." But every now and then, the ol' YouTube algorithm actually recommends something cool, and today I'm going to share one of the better videos it's exposed me to: RANDY WRITES A NOVEL.
The seventy-one minute long video is a standup special starring Randy Feltface, a simple yet incredibly cute looking puppet who takes the stage under very simple pretenses: He finished that big novel he's been working on! And he wants to read some of it to the lovely audience that has come to see him! Isn't that nice? It sure is, but unfortunately, Randy (voiced and operated by Australian comedian Heath McIvor) never seems to quite get around to reading any of it. Every time he's just about to start a passage, he looks out to the crowd and goes on some crazy tangent.
The thing is, aside from being hilarious, Randy has some surprisingly deep and poignant thoughts about life, love, loss, sobriety, the ethics of veganism, and plenty of other topics. Seriously, you should know going in that this live stand-up special involving a spastic purple puppet goes to some intense emotional territories, but Randy always knows how to reel you back in with a good zinger. It's truly stunning to watch as he weaves through his various stories (while ostensibly never talking about the one he's been working so hard on).
I remember being completely floored by the brilliance of this special when I first saw it a few months back, and how I felt like I'd gone through a crazy emotional rollercoaster by the time the stage lights go dim and the credits roll. There was a true catharsis by the end though, and I'm recommending this to you all today in the hopes that you'll watch it, laugh a little, think a little, and hopefully feel a little better about the spot you're currently occupying in this chaotic universe.
There's another special of Randy's up on YouTube, RANDY IS SOBER, and I strongly recommend giving that a watch as well. Hell, make it a Randy double feature! You've got the time right now, and you won't regret it. or maybe you will, but if you can't get down with the beautiful art of puppetry, then we are on two different wavelengths, and we've probably got as much chance of getting along as Randy has of ever getting around to sharing some of his novel with us. Here's a clip to get you going:

Randy Feltface: Comedian. Author (?). Loquacious observer of the human condition. |
