CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (5/1/20): THE LAST DRIVE-IN WITH JOE BOB BRIGGS

CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (5/1/20)

THE LAST DRIVE-IN WITH JOE BOB BRIGGS

By Chris La Vigna (@Chris_LaVigna)

Get ready you freaks! Joe Bob's back!

Back in the day, creature feature hosts like Vampira, Elvira, and Svengoolie were a vital part of life for many horror fans.Much in the same way radio DJs would expose their listeners to new music and keep things lively with their unique voices, horror hosts would turn on their audiences to all kinds of classic and outright weird chunks of cinematic gold with their shows, chiming in here and there to add a little extra fun and personality to the proceedings.

In the 1990s, nobody was better at horror hosting  than good ol' Joe Bob Briggs on TNT's evening program MONSTERVISION. The show eventually ended in the early 2000s, and for almost twenty years, us mutants had to go without our beloved Joe Bob and his Drive-In totals ("eight severed heads! four pairs of breasts!" etc).... That is, until the good folks at Shudder brought him back as the host of a new show, THE LAST DRIVE-IN!

After gifting us horror freaks with a few one-off holiday specials with Joe Bob back in front of his trailer ranting about fright flicks (the first of which had so many people logging on that it crashed the site), the streaming service eventually went whole hog on a new Joe Bob-hosted series, with season two of THE LAST DRIVE-IN premiering last Friday (the double feature for that one was CHOPPING MALL and BLOOD SUCKING FREAKS).

Joe Bob Briggs, killing it as usual

Even though there's no commercials, Joe Bob still breaks up the movie with his colorful commentary and bottomless grindhouse movie knowledge, and if you don't already know, you'll soon realize that his segments are vital. He also interviews guests who have worked on the films he's screening, and goes through the digital fan mail with his co-host Darcy the Mail Girl (Diana Price).

The show airs live at 9PM EST on Fridays over at Shudder, and while all of the episodes are archived and available to watch, this show really is best experienced live, especially if you inclined to live-tweet along with all of the other mutated fans out there. So my recommendation for this Friday, the start of a new month in lockdown, is for you to pop some popcorn and join me and the rest of hordes of horror fans who will be tuning in tonight to watch Joe Bob do his thing!

And now, I'll end on this image of Darcy dressed up as that chick who gets impaled with a shotgun in HALLOWEEN IV, just 'cause. See you goons tonight at the digital Drive-In!
