Not only is it Monday, and thus the beginning of a new round of Q-Recs from yours truly, but it's also 4/20 BRO HELL YEAH BLAZE IT MAGGOT! Actually, I don't really smoke weed anymore, I used to, but then I quit around summer 2011 'cause I was trying to lose weight and I figured it'd make sense to stop getting baked and eating half the contents of my fridge because Stoned Chris does not understand the concept of portion control and...what was I talking about again? Oh yeah, you should totally get stoned and watch the PANTERA HOME VIDEO TRILOGY.
If you don't already know Pantera, they're a metal band from the 90s that helped pioneer/popularize the sub-genres of groove metal and stoner metal. Before watching any of these videos, you should go ahead and listen to some of their classic records, like COWBOYS FROM HELL, VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER, & FAR BEYOND DRIVEN, and keep exploring from there.
Okay, so now that you know just how fucking hard Pantera rips, let's talk about their videos. Along with a series of kick ass albums, Pantera dropped three video releases on VHS (they were also later re-released on DVD). The videos all feature music videos for hit singles like COWBOYS FROM HELL and WALK, as well as tons of footage of the band goofing around backstage, interacting with fans, and just generally behaving like drunken metalhead goofs.
The first video, titled simply COWBOYS FROM HELL: THE VIDEOS, mostly consists of all the music videos the band released for their first big release, COWBOYS FROM HELL, but also includes footage of the guys going nuts on tour. There's really not much more to say about it, other than how cool it is to watch footage of a band experiencing the beginning of their glory years.
The second release, VULGAR VIDEO, features music videos & footage from the band's tour supporting their album VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER. The video's longer, and has a greater emphasis on the backstage footage, which was primarily shot by the band themselves, along with various members of their tour crew, a motley gang as colorful as they were hardworking. You really get a sense of how everyone involved is about this lifestyle: the music, the road, the booze, the women, they love and live for it all.
The third, and sadly final, home video release is called PANTERA 3: WATCH IT GO. With a run time just a little over two hours, this is the longest of the three films, and you'll come to appreciate every single frame of the heavy metal excess on display here. At this point, Pantera had been the reigning champs of American Metal for sometime, and everything about this video feels like it's about us getting to see the band up-close and personal as they take another victory lap. It's so damn fun, and by the time the credits start rolling, you'll be wondering how two hours just flew by that quickly. You'll probably also really want to start a band and go on tour.
So if you've got a dealer who's still doing business under the current circumstances, or were smart enough to stock up before we all had to go into lock down, light it up and press play amigo. Take a ride with the true Cowboys From Hell, PANTERA! Happy 4/20! REST IN PEACE DIMEBAG DARRELL AND VINNIE PAUL! Hope you guys are having an awesome shred sesh on the other side!
