CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (4/2/20)

KPISS RADIO, THE GOLDEN STREAM

The (mobile) home base of KPIS, The Golden Stream

It's no secret that terrestrial radio, at least in the United States, has been in dire straits for some time now. Too many ads, too much repetition in the playlists, and not enough quality on-air talent with freedom to experiment or expose listeners to new sounds. With the exception of the occasional college/pirate radio station, and maybe even one or two commercial stations that seem to have some idea of what they're doing, there's just not a lot of good stuff on the dial. Well, that's where the internet steps in.

Today, I'm gonna tell you about one of the coolest internet stations around, KPISS . Having changed locations several times over the course of their brief history, the freeform station now currently transmits out of an RV parked in a private lot in Bushwick.

On the "About Us" page of their website, KPISS, The Golden Stream, is described as "...basically a post college internet radio station serving Bushwick / Bedstuy for 4 Years strong. Our programming leans heavy towards oldies, indie rock and personal stories with some hip hop & a smattering of new pop music." I first started listening to KPISS a few years ago, when Marcus Parks, co-host of one of my favorite podcasts, LAST PODCAST ON THE LEFT, live-streamed himself doing some guest DJ sets for the station his show called MILK AND PEPPERS. Since then, I've tuned in to hear all sorts of cool tunes and shows, like I JUST WANT MY KIDS BACK, a show that airs on Mondays from 8:00-9:00PM EST hosted by DJ Homeless Dad and specializes in lo-fi indie and emo tunes, or EXTRA ANCHOVIES (Thursdays 9-10PM EST), a wild show that traffics in super cool euro synth-pop and ambient music (the show's tagline: Love! Sex! Synthesizers!).

KPISS founder/manager/janitor Sheri Barclay

Those are just two examples of their numerous shows, many of which also veer into the alt-comedy and socio-political talk radio genres. I'm only scratching the surface of course, you'd be better off checking out their website to sift through all of their unique programming. If you're an independent musician looking for a new venue to air your songs on, you can submit your music here. If you're like me, and also foster delusions of being the Wolfman Jack of your generation, You can submit an inquiry about hosting a show/ or podcast on the station here (I'm currently crafting my pitch-- DJ C La-V is in the houuuuuseeee!).

Though founder/manager/janitor Sheri Barclay has temporarily shut down operations in the RV due to NYC's recent ordinances in response to the Coronavirus, the station is still transmitting live, and as I mentioned, there's tons of shows in their back catalogue for you to listen/vibe out to while you're stuck at home. Some of the hosts are even still doing their shows, broadcasting remotely from their respective bunkers.

If you're looking for some nuggets of audio gold to help get you through, check out KPISS. Unlike its namesake, you'll never want to flush it down the toilet!...Okay, look, not every one of these is gonna have a perfect closing line, I'm trying my hardest here. These are crazy times, people! Listen to some music and chill! Now get outta here, I'm gonna dance around in my room to some weird Italian disco. Long live KPISS!
