CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/31/20): DUDE BRO PARTY MASSACRE III

CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/31/20) :  DUDE BRO PARTY MASSACRE III By Chris La Vigna ( @Chris_LaVigna ) Dude, this movie will LITERALLY blow your mind... T he slasher boom of the 1980s continues to be a fertile ground of inspiration for filmmakers, even decades after the peak of its dominance in popular culture. For the comedy troupe 5-Second Films ,  who gained popularity on the 'net producing hilarious micro-short films, The genre's tropes were the perfect setup for their first stab (heh heh) at feature filmmaking, the 2015 slasher parody DUDE BRO PARTY MASSACRE III . First things first, it should be noted that this is a standalone film. There is no DUDE BRO PARTY MASSACRE or DUDE BRO PARTY MASSACRE II. Indeed, the movie's opening functions as an absurdly overstuffed "previously on..." montage, bringing the viewer up to speed on the violent killing spree(s) of a vicious psychopath known as MotherFace, who is the indef...

CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/30/20): BLUE RUIN

CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/30/20) :  BLUE RUIN By Chris La Vigna ( @Chris_LaVigna ) Dwight (Macon Blair) must reckon with past and present trauma in BLUE RUIN In 2013,  director Jeremy Saulnier (GREEN ROOM, HOLD THE DARK) and his childhood friend/longtime filmmaking cohort Macon Blair (I DON'T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE) dropped a bombshell of a movie unto an unsuspecting populace: BLUE RUIN , a tale of one lost man's quest for revenge, and the fallout of his poorly made plans. Initially conceived as a last ditch effort to make their film careers take off after their prior feature MURDER PARTY failed to make a big enough splash (spoiler alert: it worked), Saulnier and Blair crafted a simple yet brutal story: Dwight (Blair, playing the lead role with a potent mix of stoicism and vulnerability) is a drifter who skulks around Delaware boardwalks and lives out of a beat-up blue Pontiac. One day, he's scooped up by a loca...

CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/27/20): TWO MINUTES TO LATE NIGHT

CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/27/20) : TWO MINUTES TO LATE NIGHT By Chris La Vigna ( @Chris_LaVigna ) Two Minutes To Late Night: The heavy metal talk show you always knew you needed, but were too afraid to ask for... Metal is the music of the people. I have made this declaration, and it cannot be challenged in any way. I am right, and you are wrong. Just accept it. Alright, now that I've gotten that out of the way, on to today's Q-Rec Of The Day: the metal-themed talk/sketch show TWO MINUTES TO LATE NIGHT ! Hosted by Jordan Olds, aka Gwarsenio Hall, the internet's number one corpse paint rockin' media personality (again, I have no real authority to back this up with, but screw it, it's my blog man), TWO MINUTES TO LATE NIGHT is basically what happens when your metalhead friends and your film school friends get together and try to make a show that they're pretty confident they could sell to Adult Swim (I wouldn't know anythin...

CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/26/20): RADIO GARDEN

CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/26/20) : RADIO GARDEN By Chris La Vigna ( @Chris_LaVigna ) You can listen to radio stations all over the world thanks to Radio.garden I'll confess that today's recommendation is inspired my longtime fascination with the medium of radio, be it old-school terrestrial radio, podcasts, or the countless hole-in-the-wall internet radio stations scattered across the web. Ever since I was a little kid, listening to 92.3 K-Rock on my CD Walkman with a built-in AM/FM radio, there's always been a part of me that's wanted to be a disc jockey, bantering with listeners between songs, interviewing touring bands, and just living a life around music and/or being a shock jock, like Howard Stern or Opie & Anthony. Well for those of you who love radio, and are curious to hear what people are broadcasting and listening to all over the globe, look no further than Radio Garden ! Radio Garden is an awesome website that...

CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/25/20): RE-ANIMATOR

Image
CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/25/20) : RE-ANIMATOR By Chris La Vigna ( @Chris_LaVigna ) Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) is here to give Dr. Frankenstein a run for his money... As if all of the unrelentingly nasty news regarding COVID-19 wasn't enough, the horror community has suffered a heavy loss today: filmmaker  Stuart Gordon , perhaps best known for directing classic horror movies such as RE-ANIMATOR, FROM BEYOND, DOLLS, and CASTLE FREAK, to name only a few, passed away today at the age of 72. In memory of Mr. Gordon, today I'm recommending that you watch what is probably his best known film, the gonzo 1985 horror movie RE-ANIMATOR. Loosely based upon H.P. Lovecraft's serialized story "Herbert West-Reanimator," The film concerns the radical scientific exploits of one Herbert West (played by the great Jeffrey Combs), a young scientist who has found a way to bring the dead back from the grave by injecting them with his neon g...

CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/24/20): THE 80s SLASHER LIBRARIAN

Image
CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/24/20) : THE 80s SLASHER LIBRARIAN By Chris La Vigna ( @Chris_LaVigna ) The 80s Slasher Librarian is here for all of your horror audiobook screams...er, I mean, needs! Some of you might not know this, but back in the day, movie novelizations were a prolific sub section of the literary market. I myself remember buying the novelization to Sam Raimi's 2002 SPIDERMAN film at a Scholastic book fair as a kid, reading through the whole thing in two days because I was so excited for the movie that I was willing to read it before I saw it. And there are countless examples of filmic stories being re-told in prose, particularly in the horror and sci-fi genres. Hell, ask any die-hard STAR WARS fan about the entire secondary universe that exists within all of the novelizations and tie-in books... While the glory days of movie novelizations have long since passed, out there in the wilds of the world wide web, there's one m...

CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/23/20): BALLMASTRZ 9009

Image
CHRIS' QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATION OF THE DAY (3/23/20) :   BALLMASTRZ 9009 By Chris La Vigna ( @Chris_LaVigna ) A promotional still for season 2, which really leans on the show's anime influences. Okay, I know that right now, things are looking pretty bleak. The COVID-19 outbreak probably hasn't even hit its peak yet, and many of us are probably already starting to go a little nutty from being cooped up in our rooms, practicing all of that good social distancing stuff. Well, I'm right there with you, and the only way I can possibly think to be of use to my fellow man right now is by recommending some cool media to watch/listen to/read while we all wait out this particularly new  shitstorm (at least for those of us who weren't around for the Bubonic Plague or the Spanish Flu). That brings me to today's recommended viewing: Adult Swim's BALLMASTRZ 9009.  Created by Christy Karacas, whose prior credits include creating another classic Adult Swim Sh...
